Marissa Mayer’s Yahoo news: Tumblr acquisition in the works

Marissa Mayer, Yahoo CEO and all-around badass, is most likely going to add Tumblr to her list of victims, eh-hem, we mean acquisitions.

Yahoo is expected to announce it’s $1.1 billion dollar buyout of the popular social networking site. If it goes through, this will be one of the largest social media acquisitions in history — surpassing even Facebook’s $1 billion Instagram purchase.

Yahoo has given Tumblr a death sentence. By death sentence we mean the struggling Web pioneer has decided to buy out Tumblr for $1.1 billion dollars.

After defecting from Google last year, Yahoo chief executive Marissa Mayer
has bought up to 6 start-ups to try and revitalize Yahoo’s laggard image with the younger crowd.

Unfortunately, the pricey acquisitions have not fared well for (READ: essentially killed) the companies bought by Yahoo as many of them were left neglected after the buyout.

Even though Tumblr creator and wunderkind David Karp doesn’t believe in making money, Tumblr will most likely accept as things have been tense between Karp and the board of creators.

The deal is expected to be one of the largest social media acquisitions in history,
larger than Facebook’s $1 billion acquisition of Instagram last year — which didn’t generate much money for Zuck.

Mayer will probably pay more attention to Tumblr considering the company’s wide reach and young user base, but will it be able to generate money?

Do you think this is the end for Tumblr? Let us know in the comments!
